General
French Guiana

Just off the coast of Kourou are three islands: the Ile St-Joseph, Ile Royale and the Ile du Diable. Together they are also known as the Iles du Salut.

Until 1953 political prisoners were held on the Devil's Island. One of the most famous residents was Henri Charriere, better known as Papillon, who managed to escape and write a book about it. Another well known resident was Alfred Dreyfus.

The islands can be seen as a daytrip from Korou. In the morning boats leave from the port at the end of the Ave de Gaulle, they return in the ned of the afternoon. In summer you need to book in advance. You can also stay on the Ile Royale in the Auberge Iles du Slaut. It is also posisble to camp.
